The Daniell Orchestra program is comprised of approximately 300 students across 6-8 grade.  All orchestra courses are yearlong enrollment and do not change between semesters.

The Daniell “String Orchestra” is a performance group comprised of 100-150 6th grade students who enter Daniell Middle School with or without prior musical experience that meets every day.  Students are split into two equal classes by last name.  This yearlong course will cover all beginning mechanics of string instruments: posture, note reading, rhythm, pitch discrimination, expression, writing, music history and music literacy.  Private lessons are highly encouraged but not required.  A list of highly qualified individuals is available here.

The Daniell “Sinfonia Orchestra is a performance group comprised of 100-150 7th grade students with at least one year of playing experience that meets every day.  Students are split evenly between two classes and perform GMEA level II-III literature.  Students will perform a Fall, Winter, LGPE and Spring concert outside of normal school hours.  The course will cover intermediate mechanics of string instruments continuing from beginning orchestra: posture, vibrato, note reading, rhythm, pitch discrimination, expression, writing, composition, improvisation, music history and music literacy at an intermediate level.  Private lessons are highly encouraged and teacher lists are available above.

The Daniell “Philharmonic Orchestras” is a performance group comprised of 100-150 8th grade students with at least two years of playing experience that meets every day.  Students are split evenly between two classes and perform GMEA level III-IV literature.  Students will perform a Fall, Winter, LGPE and Spring concert outside of normal school hours.  The course will cover advanced mechanics of string instruments continuing from beginning orchestra: posture, vibrato, note reading, rhythm, pitch discrimination, expression, writing, composition, improvisation, music history and music literacy at an advanced level.  This class also takes field trips such as the Atlanta Symphony visit as well as the yearly Disney trip!  Private lessons are highly encouraged and teacher lists are available above.

The Daniell “Chamber Orchestra” is the top ensemble at Daniell that performs challenging, advanced literature.  Students in 6-8 grade are selected through competitive auditions.  The members of the Chamber Orchestra will perform one winter and one spring concert at the eighth grade’s regularly scheduled concerts.  Students meet once a week after school from 4:30-6:30.  Private lessons are highly encouraged and teacher lists are available above.
